The UK is home to a plethora of impressively designed buildings.
Sadly, it is also home to plenty of architectural failures — as demonstrated by the shortlist of buildings nominated for the Carbuncle Cup, an annual award that is given to the UK's worst designed building by architecture site BD.
This year's shortlist is comprised of six hideous buildings that fall victim to "contextual incongruity, myopic cladding, woeful detailing, mind-numbing mediocrity, clumsy massing, incoherent form and ... poor planning," according to BD.
The winner (really, the loser) of the cup was announced on September 7, following in the footsteps of London's 20 Fenchurch, also known as the Walkie Talkie, which received the title for the UK's worst new building last year.
Here are all the buildings that made the list:
Saffron Square, London — This Croydon-based high-rise flat development, designed by Rolfe Judd, was described by one BD reader as a “car crash of a façade" thanks to its ugly jumble of colours.
Poole Methodist Church extension, Poole — The "bland" extension of a church in Poole created by the Intelligent Design Centre didn't impress BD. The nominator called the building "an unimaginative grey box."
Lincoln Plaza, London — BUJ Architects is responsible for this haphazard building, which BD likened to "a grotesque Jenga game of rabid rectilinear blocks of no discernible form or profile."
