Raise Raze Cave, Hou de Sousa re-ball!

An unused, underground trolley station is getting a makeover of epic proportions. The Dupont Underground in Washington, DC, will soon be filled to the brim with 650,000 translucent, plastic balls. It looks like Minecraft mixed with a pearl white bubble bath.

The unusual art exhibit, created by two-person architecture firm Hou de Sousa, started as a proposal for the international design competition "Re-Ball!" It called upon creative thinkers to reuse the materials left over from an adult ball pit built last summer.

We spoke with architect Josh de Sousa on how the idea came together.

Remember those photos of "The Beach" you couldn't escape on Instagram last summer?



A 10,000-square-foot exhibit at The National Building Museum invited visitors to play in an ocean-themed ball pit for all ages.



The Re-Ball! competition challenged designers to repurpose those half-million balls in an exhibit at the Dupont Underground.
