7 floating homes capture the luxury and squalor of living on water

Dry land might be the go-to spot to build a home, but that doesn't mean it's the only option.

From the stilt-supported shacks in Lagos, Nigeria, to the luxurious underwater palaces bobbing in Dubai, floating homes are the answer when solid ground is out of the question.

Many use a combination of concrete and styrofoam to prevent sinking but also to stay safely in place when water levels rise.

Here are some of the most mind-blowing.

A few miles off the coast of Dubai, "floating seahorses" provide lavish shelter both underwater and above.



The first home rolls out in the coming weeks and en masse later this fall. They come complete with coral gardens, an observation deck, and floor-to-ceiling windows to check out marine life.



According to Kleindienst, the company leading the structures' development, each one retails for $2.8 million.
