Cities are best admired from afar.

Up close, you can crane your neck to size up a skyscraper, but it's only from a distance you can appreciate everything.

In a recent analysis conducted by engineer Egbert Gramsbergen and urban planner Paul Kazmierczak, the duo determined which skylines were the most impressive.

They based their rankings on the number of buildings in a given city and the heights of those buildings, before feeding the numbers through an algorithm to sort them by points.

Let's just say the winner was uncontested.

16. Toronto, Canada.

Toronto's skyline has seen breakout growth over the last 15 years.

Comparison shots reveal how an influx of 300,000 new residents has led to the need for a bevy of new buildings.

15. Jakarta, Indonesia.

Over the next five years, even more architectural behemoths are slated to rise in Jakarta.

The city anticipates a mixture of office buildings, apartment complexes, and luxury hotels to accommodate Indonesia's growing tourist economy.

14. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Known for its Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur's skyline is part of an eclectic blend of urban design.

Beneath the skyscrapers are lush parks, huge malls, six-lane highways, and old-school colonial architecture.
